Crash Reporting Research

To assess the completeness of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA’s) Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS) crash database and associated collection issues.

The project seeks to estimate the rate of crash reporting completeness in MCMIS and to develop recommendations for improving the reporting of FMCSA-reportable crashes.

The study will review the State Data Quality Reports and collect and analyze a sample of carriers’ crash records, comparing them to the MCMIS crash records. The period of performance is from October 2014 to April 2016.

The research will lead to an estimate of the crash reporting completeness in MCMIS and will develop methods to improve the processes for collecting reportable crashes.
